When should you worry about varicose veins?
Varicose veins are a common condition experienced by more than 35% of all adults here in the United States. They are marked by thick, bulging, darkly colored structures just beneath the skin. Varicose veins are caused by blood pooled in the veins that has trouble being pumped back up to the heart due to malfunctions in the vein walls.
Varicose veins typically appear in the legs and are accompanied by common symptoms like swelling, aching and fatigue in the legs, and itching or irritation at the site of the veins.
These symptoms are all completely normal, and while varicose veins neither look nor feel great, they are not often a serious threat to your overall health or something to worry about.
However, if your symptoms are particularly severe, there may be something else going on that deserves a closer look.
Our team of vein specialists and board-certified vascular surgeons are trained to diagnose and treat the more serious varicose vein complications and vascular issues that can occur below the skin’s surface, such as blood clots or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Here are five signs you should see a doctor about your varicose veins:
- The skin surrounding your varicose veins is discolored (brown or red), scaly or peeling.
- The skin around your varicose veins is warm to the touch.
- You feel tingling or numbness around your varicose veins.
- There is an ulcer or open sore forming on the surface of your skin near your varicose veins.
- The swelling and aching feeling is constant and chronic and not relieved by simple therapies like elevating your legs.
Additionally, if your veins are protruding outward so severely, and they become nicked and start to bleed, seek medical help right away.
If our vein experts observe symptoms of a blood clot, or a more serious deep venous disorder, they are able to swiftly recommend the next course of action, including medication or surgery in rare cases.
How are varicose veins treated?
Simple measures such as wearing compression stockings, elevating your legs several times a day to encourage blood flow towards the heart, and staying hydrated can go a long way in alleviating varicose vein symptoms.
If your varicose veins are more stubborn, and you want to improve not only how your legs feel but how they look too, there are many effective methods for varicose vein removal.
At VeinSolutions, we offer sclerotherapy and endovenous ablation conveniently performed in our vein removal clinics and minimally invasive vein surgery to remove varicose veins when other therapies have not been successful.
