Why Men Shouldn’t Ignore Varicose Veins: More Than a Cosmetic Concern

Did you know that over 35% of Americans suffer from varicose veins, or some type of venous disorder? While most people think varicose veins only occur in women, they do affect men as well.

According to one study, approximately 10 to 15 percent of men in the world’s western countries will develop varicose veins.

With June being Men’s Health Month, our team of vascular surgeons and vein specialists are sharing a closer look at this common venous disorder that your fathers, grandfathers, husbands, and any male loved ones should be aware of.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are thick, ropey, purple/blueish structures appearing beneath the skin’s surface, typically on the legs. They form when small valves within the vein walls fail to pump blood properly back up towards the heart resulting in blood that pools and stagnates This then causes the vein to thicken and protrude. Varicose veins are often accompanied by achiness, swelling and feelings of fatigue and heaviness in the legs.

While varicose veins are not usually dangerous, and typically are seen as more of a cosmetic concern, it is always important to get them checked out to ensure there is not some other underlying health condition causing the poor circulation.

Who is at risk for varicose veins?

The most common risk factors for men developing varicose veins include:

  • Prolonged sitting or standing (as with certain types of jobs)
  • Obesity
  • Family history of varicose veins or other circulatory problems
  • Trauma to the legs as a result of surgery or injury

While men may not always be concerned with the cosmetic impact of varicose veins, if left untreated, they can lead to chronic swelling and irritation, and potentially blood clots and non-healing ulcers.
