What is Vascular Disease?
If you’ve ever had varicose veins or suffered from a blood clot, you have experienced some form of vascular disease.
Vascular disease includes conditions that affect the circulatory system like arterial diseases (of the arteries), venous diseases (of the veins), and blood clotting disorders.
Millions of people experience some form of vascular disease in their lifetime. It is often caused by poor circulation and blocked veins or arteries along with other chronic conditions like hypertension/high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or a family history of circulatory issues or unhealthy habits like smoking. If left untreated, vascular disease can lead to serious, even potentially fatal, issues like heart attack or stroke.
At VeinSolutions, our board-certified vascular surgeons and vein specialists are experts in treating venous conditions, such as varicose veins, spider veins, and other deep venous disorders like DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis).
September is Vascular Disease Awareness Month, with the goal to help educate on how to maintain healthy circulation in hopes of potentially preventing your risk for developing vascular disease in the future.
How can you improve circulation and help prevent vascular disease?
The key to preventing most vascular diseases and venous disorders is to have good circulation.
A few ways that you can help promote healthy circulation include:
- Getting enough regular physical activity and exercise, at least 150 minutes per week is recommended for adults
- Eating a well balanced diet, full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and lean proteins
- Staying hydrated, as the more water you drink, the easier it is for blood to flow and circulate through your veins
- Managing conditions like hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes, as directed by your physician
If you do start to notice signs of a venous disorder (like knotted, protruding or discolored veins, swollen legs or ankles, or chronic cramping, especially at night), we can help treat you and soothe your symptoms.
How do you treat venous disorders/vascular disease?
Some forms of therapy we offer at VeinSolutions to treat common venous disorders like spider or varicose veins are:
- Sclerotherapy: a non-invasive injection therapy to dissolve troubled veins
- Endovenous Ablation: a minimally-invasive form of heat/laser therapy used to melt the dysfunctional veins
- Minimally-invasive vein surgery (or phlebectomy): surgical removal of stubborn veins that have not responded successfully to other treatments
For more serious venous disorders like blood clots or DVT, medications like blood thinners or surgery, in extreme cases, may be necessary.
Whatever your needs are for both the therapeutic and cosmetic treatment of venous disorders, VeinSolutions is here to help.
