Sclerotherapy for spider veins: Everything you need to know
Spider veins are a common vein disorder indicated by thin, whisplike vein structures and formations appearing under the skin, usually on the legs. While they are typically not painful, there can be some swelling and aching associated with them. Most people who suffer from them though are more irritated by their appearance.
Fortunately, spider veins are something our team of board certified vascular surgeons and vein specialists treat easily and frequently at our vein treatment centers in Austin, Georgetown, and Kyle.
One of the most effective therapies to reduce the appearance of spider veins is sclerotherapy.
What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a non-invasive procedure that uses injections of a special solution to gently break down the spider vein structure, causing it to eventually disintegrate and disappear. There are no incisions or stitches, and there is typically very little pain or discomfort (except for a potential light burning or tingling sensation) resulting in quick recovery times.
What does the procedure entail?
Sclerotherapy is conveniently performed in our offices with most sessions lasting under an hour. You will recline comfortably while our provider prepare the spider vein area for the injections. A fine needle carrying the solution to dissolve the veins is then inserted. The injections will be followed by gentle massage to ensure the solution is evenly dispersed and that circulation is healthy.
Severe, or thicker-appearing, spider veins may require several sessions of injections to achieve visible results.
Our expert vein specialists will offer guidance on the most effective treatment option to meet both your therapeutic and aesthetic goals.
What does sclerotherapy recovery look like?
Patients are able to return home right after the procedure, or even to work if they feel up to it. You will be instructed to wear compression stockings to help healing and promote circulation following sclerotherapy. Walking is also encouraged to help boost circulation, and prolonged sitting or standing should be avoided for several days afterwards.
When will I see results with sclerotherapy?
The appearance of your legs will not change overnight. It is a gradual process for the spider veins to break down and slowly disappear. Depending on the severity of the spider veins, you can expect to see them fade away over the course of several weeks to months.
One session may successfully eliminate approximately 50% to 80% of the injected veins. Results are typically achieved in 2-3 sessions.
Larger, more stubborn spider veins, or thick varicose veins, may require additional sclerotherapy treatments and a longer time to achieve desired results.
What are the benefits of sclerotherapy?
Benefits of sclerotherapy in treating spider veins include:
- It is a non-invasive procedure where no incisions, anesthesia or hospital stay are required.
- The procedure is typically painless and offers a speedy recovery with patients being able to return to work and normal activities right away.
- Effective results are frequently achieved after one session, and there is often no need for follow-up treatment.
