The 411 on Phlebectomy
Phlebectomy is a common, minimally-invasive procedure that we perform at VeinSolutions to remove varicose veins, particularly the most severe, stubborn variety.
Varicose veins affect more than 35% of Americans, who are typically women. They can be a painful condition that causes swollen ankles and legs, cramps, and unattractive, discolored, abnormal veins under the skin.
If you are considering options to treat your varicose veins and eliminate symptoms, phlebectomy can be an effective choice. It can help you not only achieve the therapeutic results you want, but enhance the physical appearance of your legs too.
Here’s what you need to know about phlebectomy and if it’s a suitable option for you:
Phlebectomy is a minimally-invasive procedure.
Phlebectomy is minimally-invasive vein removal surgery. There is little down time afterwards in terms of recovery. The procedure is conveniently performed in one of our two clinics via a tiny puncture made in the skin using local anesthesia. Then the affected vein is gently removed via the puncture site.
The best candidates for phlebectomy.
This procedure is best suited for patients with veins that are bulging, enlarged, and clearly visible under the skin’s surface. It is also a good option for those who have not had success with other varicose vein treatments. Because the large, affected vein is removed in its entirety, there is little chance that it will ever resurface or cause painful symptoms again.
Phlebectomy is a quick and efficient, in-office procedure.
To start, the area targeted for varicose vein removal is numbed with local anesthesia, and a small puncture is made on the skin through which the vein will be removed. The entire procedure is performed in the office by one of our board-certified vein specialists and takes about 30 minutes to one hour. Your leg is wrapped comfortably in compression garments afterwards, and you are free to return home — or to work if it’s not physically strenuous — right away.
Recovery is often fairly easy for most patients.
Most of our patients report little to no pain with phlebectomy. You can typically return to normal activities the day of the procedure while avoiding things like heavy lifting, intense exercise, or sitting or standing for too long. Our vein specialists will give you guidance on how to take care of your legs and/or wearing compression stockings following the procedure.
Positive results are often immediate!
Because the entire vein is removed, the painful symptoms associated with it will be gone immediately, along with the unsightly appearance. There may be slight bruising or swelling at the puncture site right after the procedure, but that typically will subside within a few days.
Our patients who undergo phlebectomy feel more confident about the appearance of their legs and are relieved to be free of painful varicose vein symptoms for good!
