Is there a connection between cold feet and varicose veins?

Cold feet could signify a number of health issues such as diabetes, anemia, hyperthyroidism, Peripheral Artery Disease, or neuropathy.

Another common condition they could point to is varicose veins.

Varicose veins are thick, bulging structures under the skin that can cause painful swelling, aches and irritation in the legs and feet. They occur when tiny valves in the veins malfunction and leak blood into the vein structure, instead of pumping it upwards into the body as they should, resulting in pools of stagnant, dark blood.

A recent study revealed that people who experience cold feet, or cold hypersensitivity, also often suffer from varicose veins, as poor circulation is a factor common to both.

Data for the study was gathered on more than 8,700 adults in Taiwan between the ages of 30 and 70 years old.

Key highlights of the research include:

  • There was a significant connection between varicose veins, cold hypersensitivity, and the sensation of heavy legs
  • Those who reported moderate and severe cold hypersensitivity were at an increased risk for varicose veins
  • Heaviness and a feeling of fatigue in the legs was also closely linked to developing varicose veins

If you are experiencing chronic cold feet, especially alongside a feeling of heaviness in your legs, please contact our vein specialists for a consultation.

We can determine if you do have varicose veins, or another venous disorder or vascular condition, contributing to your cold feet and leg heaviness.
